[BadPanda022] Strayfolk – What Wouldn’t I Do
This monday Bad Panda went to Sweden with Henrik Thorén and his group, Strayfolk. I would have never imagined to find there a great americana group, inspired by Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Hank Williams, Steve Earle amd Woody Guthrie.
The song released for Bad Panda has been a part of the live set for a few years and this recording features only a few members improvising an arrangement for a song that was then only a day old or so. Though attempts have been made to re-record it, it has a certain simplicity in this form that is hard to reproduce. And it really sounds great to our ears.
Strayfolk is an americana constellation found on along the south-west and wester seafront of Sweden. It is composed of lead singer and band songwriter Henrik Thorén, guitarist and banjonista Carl Malmqvist, batterist Torbjörn Lorén, bassmaster Kalle Berlin, steel guitarist Anders Danielsson and piano whisperer Christoffer Ödman. A primordial version of the band appeared in Umeå in 2001 but it wasn’t until 2003, after a move to Gothenburg that the current form came into being.
Musically it has always been some form of americana or the other with the occasional drift into bluegrass and more traditional country. The self-titled debut album was released on Henrik Thorén’s purpose built record label and currently the band is slowly recording new material.
The Q&A with Henrik:
Where do you live actually?
I live in Malmö, Sweden, the rest of the band is in Gothenburg.
What is the last thing you ate?
Too many for this short space.
Go and never darken my towels again. -Groucho Marx
“I am a fugitive from a chain gang” Mervyn LeRoy’s 1932 masterpiece.
At the moment it’s got to be the Jackson Browne song “Our Lady of the Well”.
Hm, difficult. I don’t know, there’s a bar close to where I live that I like, it’s a beer joint with a large selection of brands. Something for the pretentious beer-drinker I guess.
Kris Kristofferson in Gothenburg a few years back.
Favourite place on earth?
I can honestly say I don’t think I have a favorite place.
Where would you wish to wake up tomorrow?
Somewhere a tad less dreary.
