[BadPanda096] Memotone – Bad Panda EP

with 4 comments

William Yates is a talented multi-instrumentalist and producer from south Wiltshire, UK working under the name ‘memotone‘.

His sound is made up of layered instrumentation over the top of field recordings, conversation, atmospheres and electronica programming all tied up with live acoustic come wonky MPC built beats, inspired by sounds of  Susumu Yokota, Mount Kimbie, Shlohmo, Murcof, Flying Lotus and Four Tet.

We saw one of his videos on youtube and have loved his stuff ever since (the prolific composer already had some EPs on Black Acre and other two EPs coming out on september and october) and found out that he was recently selected by Gilles Peterson for his always-amazing “All winners” show on BBC1. We wouldn’t be surpised to see him hitting big soon, meanwhile please enjoy the free EP he made for Bad Panda.

Where do you live actually?

I live in Tollard Royal which is a tiny village in the south of Wiltshire, but I am surrounded by Dorset. UK.

What is the last thing you ate?

A cold pasta salad with muscles and sesame seed dressing.

Your addiction ?

Food most probably.

What do you collect?

I used to be a big collector when I was growning up. Anything shiney, keys, buttons. Now I like to keep a really nice stone on me.

What is your favorite word?

It used to be froth. I don’t really even like that word any more. Puddle is good. Twat. Thats nice. Solid.

One quote?

‘If the diver always thought of the shark, he would never lay hands on the pearl’.
SA’DI

One movie?

No. I can’t give that to you. Top 10 in no specific order maybe…

1. The Story of the Weeping Camel
2. City of God
3. Dead Man’s Shoes
4. The Return
5. Spirited Away
6. OldBoy
7. The Bothersome Man
8. The Blair Witch Project
9. Anchorman
10. Let The Right One In (Original)
11. Evil Dead II
12. The Shining
Maybe not….

One book?

Again, this is to big an ask. There are too many great books. I will list 5.

1. RUMO
2. The Catcher In  The Rye
3. House Of Leaves
4. Anything by Shaun Tan
5. If Nobody Speaks Of Remarkable Things

Which song do you listen when you wake up?

I don’t ever really listen to music in the morning. Very much more of a night dweller.

A song you wish you wrote yourself?

‘Stem/Long Stem’ by DJ Shadow. (If I had written it all and not used samples.)

The song to be played at your funeral?

‘Hell, Fire and Damnation’ by Jocelyn Pook. Hahaha.

A song for relaxing on a beach?

I think if I had to listen to only one song on the beach it would do anything but relax me. But if I have to choose it would have to be ‘Above Chiangmai’ by Briand Eno & Harold Budd.

One website?

www.youtube.com (what can’t it do?)

What do you think about music industry?

I am in a pretty good place right now so I can’t complain. Maybe just have a little more courage.

What about Creative Commons?

A step forwards.

Favorite venue?

I really like Lakota in Bristol as a club. Venue has to be the The Duke Of York’s Picturehouse in Brighton.

Favourite concert?

The Whale Watching Tour. (A Bedroom Community Label Showcase.)

Favourite place on earth?

I have been no where. But Golden Cap on the sound coast of Dorset is pretty special.

Where would you wish to wake up tomorrow?

My bed.

  2. […] Experimental beat maker Memotone brings a fresh perspective to the electronic music scene, spanning the wonky house to the jazz influenced electronica. Minimal, dark and thick with layers, think Four Tet meets Burial, his cleverly crafted tracks are brilliant in their individual right. He had some of his music played on the Gilles Peterson show a few months back and is set to release his latest “Memotone – EP” on Raised By Records. Get on down to Start The Bus in Bristol for the launch party on the 16th Sept, and witness yourself some good music. You can also grab a copy of the free “BAD PANDA – EP” released on Bad Panda Records HERE. […]

  3. Really great! Thanks for the free download 🙂
