[BadPanda046] Royal Hideouts – Deaf Sister
Royal Hideouts is the pet project of one college kid living in Boston and mimicking the great pop songs of his life in a closet studio. After playing with ambient and electronic music for a few years, in early 2010 he began trying to create rock music by himself, despite never having been in a band. Drawing influences primarily from new wave, post-punk, and shoegaze and inspiration comes from ”New Order, Jesus & Mary Chain, J Dilla”, Royal Hideouts produces brief tracks heavy on sensation and reverb. Also, pick up the free EPs, Pine Shark and Coral Casino.

[BadPanda045] Talvihorros – The Blue Cathedral (+ Twin Peaks Theme)
Talvihorros is Ben Chatwin, an experimental composer from London, exploring the possibilities of the guitar. His compositions venture into the fields of ambient, modern classical, drone, post-rock and folk but dont fall into the cliches associated with any of these genres.
The Blue Cathedral is an elegant and dreamy piece from his last album, Some Ambulance, meanwhile the Twin Peaks Theme is a non-CC licensed gift, a cover of the theme tune from David Lynch’s brilliant TV series, originally by Angelo Badalamenti. Fans of Fennesz, Labradford and Tim Hecker, do not miss this.

[BadPanda044] Symfoniorkestern – Vilse (Slutet remake)
Symfoniorkestern are a uniquely Swedish group, an experimental indie symphonic orchestra.
They (Pär, Hanna, Staffan, Martin, Jonathan, Nils, Jan and Jim) are like an indie-rock balkan inspired band with a grab-bag of unusual orchestration, lyrics in Swedish and lovely harmonies in the Belle & Sebastian or Françoise Hardy style. Until this day they released 3 delicious EPs (that you can download for free or buy with a lovely booklet) and 3 cool self-directed videos.
They covered Vilse by Slutet (song that was released last may on Bad Panda #23) and here it is in free download for you.
[more good news from Sweden: Slutet has been recently featured on tramsessions and stockholm boatsessions]

I once had a dog. No. I didn’t. You once had a dog. You once had a dig, too. I didn’t dig. I dug. There was a place where that was done and where it was expected to. I sung. If it were words that you were to sing I’d sung along. I’d try, too. The words were, when sung, perhaps not as important as the not. The impact of them, in their hush, in the soft midst of them is in the ones you thought they were, in the mistakes to be made and the templates that they were touching to that to you in your mind applied and could form the sentence of the momentum of the motion of the mention of the melody form from. You were thinking of another song! But I was too.

Your thoughts about filesharing/internet as a promotion tool and the actual situation of music industry?
I’m all for it. It’s been great for me, without the internet, filesharing and Netlabels etc I don’t think anyone would really have heard anything I’ve done! I love the likes of the Free Music Archive, and through CC licensing there my music has ended up as soundtrack to the most diverse and mad array of videos. It’s fascinating and fantastic, I think.

[BadPanda042] Patrick Lee – Quittin’ Time
Many good things happening these days.
- We are proud to start a collaboration (as curator) with the Free Music Archive, hosted by the awesome independent and creative radio WFMU. This means Bad Panda (and all the Bad Panda artists) have now their own page with the complete catalog. There will be more.
- Plus, the kind Harold Walker from Netherlands sent his sweet Creative Commons licensed video for Happiness by Errnois (on BadPanda#27), thus have a look at it and celebrate the Creative Commons power.
- No office chart this time, just a lazy (but streamable) selection.
Finally, out today for your listening pleasure a feel-good-anthem for the summer “that sounds like Pete Rock and Four Tet fighting a squad of Beastie Boys instrumentals in some dark alley” meanwhile Lemon Jelly and Go! Team are having a pic-nic in the park.
This is Quittin’ Time by Patrick Lee from his 22th album “The Last Thing” (that you can curiously buy, download for free or pay-what-you want) released this year on his own label Twelve Tusk, on which he also released his side projects: Beauty Flash (electro) and The Beebs (indie rock) with his wife. Patrick seems also to find the time to play in a jazz trio, DJ around USA, teach piano lessons and take care of his daughter. Power of music.

The Whole Foods bacon and blue cheese potato salad. It is spicy and ridiculous.
Your addiction?
Anchovy-stuffed green olives and beer. And lately, the HBO show True Blood.
What do you collect?
I collect old vegetables in my refrigerator’s vegetable drawer, and Stella Artois bottle caps, which is a very dumb thing to collect, because they’re all identical. Fifteen years ago I was very devoted to collecting Mad magazines.

Favourite concert?
Cornelius at the Fox Theatre in 2007. Mind? Blown.
Favourite place on earth?
This is like being on Inside The Actors Studio. I would say it’s hard to top being up in the mountains here in Colorado at my friend Donnie’s cabin. A few bachelor parties, bonfires, epic washer games, good dinners, snowmobile accidents, wounds, and a lot of music videos have happened up there. Plus he has these floating golf balls that are just addicting. There’s something to add to my addiction list: the floating golf balls at Donnie’s cabin.
Where would you wish to wake up tomorrow?
At my favorite place on earth.
And in the end, feel free to add anything else you want
I would just like to thank my parents – hi mom!

[BadPanda040] ezequiel ezequiel – Dear Permafrost
Born in Argentina in 1982, moved to Paris in 2002 where he studied classic and contemporary music and then to London in 2008, Ezequiel Claverie started making experimental music at the age of 18 after getting inspired by some contemporary drama lesson. Slowly moving from instrumental experimental music towards a more folk/dream pop/singer/songwriter approach with his acoustic guitar and casios, percussion, pipe organs, etc…
His music is available on free download on his website (and some videos on his youtube channel), you’ll be pleasantly suprised.

[BadPanda039] Bing and Ruth – Rails
Brooklyn band Bing and Ruth is an 11-piece ensemble led by composer and pianist David Moore.
Described by the NY Times as “making the most of layered and atmospheric melody,” the band utilizes clarinets, voices, cellos, and a buffet of other acoustic instruments to craft expansive soundscapes and quiet microtonal textures.
The ensemble enjoys it’s reputation as a unique live experience, and it’s recent performances in the New York area include the 2009 MATA Festival, the Wordless Music Series, Darmstadt New Music, the WFMU Festival, and Stochastic Brooklyn and you can have a tasty preview with the wonderful Take Away Show shot in Coney Island, NY, by Vincent Moon’s Blogotheque.
“Rails”, drawn from the band’s forthcoming City Lake album, begins with some Reichian clapping, overlapping different claves like puzzle pieces and then matching them with a piano figure that neatly parallels their rhythms.

[BadPanda038] Desmond & The Tutus – High Fives
The 2010 FIFA World Cup just ended, los españoles won against unlucky Netherlands and many people are saying goodbye to the beautiful South Africa. So forget Shakira’s Waka Waka (original one is good though!), now it’s time for some real african music.
Coming from Pretoria, South Africa and formed 5 years ago, Desmond & The Tutus plays an infectiously awesome blend of rock ‘n roll, indie kwela pop and genius.
Last year they had a good sunny album out and a unbelievably great summer jam single on amazing Tigersushi. Believe me.

[BadPanda037] Good Weather For An Airstrike – The Beginning Of The Rest Of Our Lives
Taking the name from the Sigur Ros masterpiece, Good Weather For An Airstrike was initially conceived at the beginning of 2009 to help Tom Honey (also of Sleepless Dreams) alleviate the issues caused by suffering from tinnitus, which causes a ringing sensation in the ear and can often result in difficulty sleeping. His idea was to create a collection of relaxing sounds which would help induce sleep. Have a good night!
